STEPS TO CALCULATE FREIGHT DENSITY AND CLASS
There are a few steps you need to follow to ensure your less than truckload shipment is classified correctly. These steps include:
- Determining the weight in pounds and the dimensions in inches for all of the pieces in your shipment.
- Calculating the Volume in cubic feet (cft) for your freight LTL. The formula for this is Volume=Length x Width x Height / 1728.
- Measuring the density of your less than truckload shipment. Density is calculated by dividing the total weight of the shipment by its volume in cubic feet. Density = Weight (lbs) / Volume (cft).
- Finding the density on the appropriate density chart to determine the classification. Remember – not all trucking companies use the same density chart, so you need to make sure you have the right information for each carrier.
